Bulldog Freshmen Start Strong

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. - Fresno State's newest additions got their first taste of collegiate competition on Friday as the duo of Mantas Bugailiskis and Patrik Pech went a combined 4-1 on day one of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic hosted at Sunrise Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Bugailiskis and Pech teamed up in doubles competition to defeat San Diego State's Jonas Meinzer and Cornelius Kolb, 6-2.
In singles play, the 'Dogs went 3-1 against the Aztecs. Both advanced through the first round as Pech knocked off Raul de la Torre 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, and Bugailiskis defeated Santiago Cevallos in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(4).
In the second round, Pech fell to SDSU's Freddy Gelbrich 6-4, 6-2. Bugailiskis though pulled off a marathon win in his second-round matchup with Meinzer. The Bulldog dropped the opening set 6-7(10), but rallied back to take the second set, 6-3. The two again went to tiebreak in the third set as Bugailiskis was able to pull out the win, 7-6(4).
Play will resume Saturday morning.
