Vazquez named semifinalist for NFF Campbell Trophy

Fresno State’s offensive lineman in line for annual award that recognizes the nation’s top student-athlete
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State senior Jacob Vazquez was named a semifinalist 2016 William V. Campbell Trophy, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame, presented by Fidelity Investments. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation and is prominently displayed inside its official home at the New York Athletic Club.

The NFF announced 156 semifinalists for the annual honor that will be presented on Dec. 6 in New York City at the 59th NFF Annual Awards Dinner.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Nov. 1, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class. At the event in New York, one member of the class will be declared the winner of the 27th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.

Vazquez, who has started all six games for the Bulldogs in 2016, entered his senior season after having already received his bachelors in agricultural business with a 4.0 GPA. His other highlights include:
- 2015 CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 first-team selection
- 2015 Fall Mountain West All-Academic Team Selection
- Two-time Mountain West Scholar-Athlete selection (maintaining 3.5 cumulative GPA)
- Awarded 2016 Agriculture Business Student Achiever Award
- Developed the 2015 first place marketing plan for the Produce for Better Health Foundation (PBH) collegiate marketing competition
- Is a 2016 nominee for the AFCA Good Works Team and the Wuerffel Trophy.
- Qualifies for the 2015-16 Division-1A FAR Academic Excellence Award, which is awarded to student-athletes who have graduated with their bachelor's degree and maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.80 or higher upon graduation

Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
