Veys takes second in his Bulldog Debut

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The Fresno State men's tennis team spent the weekend competing in the UCSB Invitational, which was highlighted by junior Xander Veys who took second place in the singles B Flight.

Veys turned heads with his performance as he made his Bulldog debut. The junior transfer from UNC Wilmington defeated Dominic Barretto of Cal (6-4, 6-4) and Young Smith of Oregon (6-2, 6-2) in his first two rounds of the invitational. Veys defeated Cal Poly's Rafa Lenhard (7-6, 6-4) in the semifinals to advance to the singles B Flight finals. His run came to an end in the finals, losing to Everett Maltby of UC Davis (6-3, 7-6).

Junior Yousseff Hassan recovered after a loss in the first round of the singles A Flight to Nicolas Moreno of UCSB (6-3, 6-4) to defeat Bryce Mckelvie of UC Davis (2-6, 6-3, 6-3) and Antoine Noel of Cal Poly (6-3, 7-6). Hassan lost in his final round to Bjorn Hoffman of Cal (7-5, 6-3). He finished 10th in the flight.

After losing the first round of the Singles C flight to Max Pham of UC Davis (1-6, 6-1, 7-5), Jeremy Moser responded by winning his next three matches on the back side of the bracket. The sophomore defeated Michael Guzman of UCLA (7-6, 3-6, 6-2), Dan Cardiff of Cal Poly (6-3, 6-3) and Paul Giraud of USF (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) to earn ninth place in the flight.Â

Freshman Bailey Gong defeated Matt Campana of St. Mary's (6-4, 7-6) before falling to Paul Giraud of USF (6-0, 6-0).

Fresno State will have four Bulldogs competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Championship hosted by Cal starting Thursday through Monday. Senior Euan McIntosh, Veys, Hassan and sophomore Mantas Bugailiskis will be competing in singles and doubles this weekend.Â
