'Dogs complete day one of ITA Northwest Regional Championships

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team traveled to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Championships at Cal this weekend, Oct. 13-17. Four Bulldogs made the trip, Euan McIntosh, Youssef Hassan, Mantas Bugailiskis and Xander Veys.
Over 100 singles players and over 50 doubles teams will be competing this weekend in Berkeley to win berths to compete in fall's top national tournament. A total of 15 schools will be in the field including Fresno State, Cal, Stanford, Oregon, Washington, Eastern Washington, Pacific, Gonzaga, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Saint Mary's, Sacramento State, Santa Clara and UC Davis.
Euan McIntosh as the No. 16 seed in the tournament had a first-round bye. McIntosh defeated Andrew Gu of Santa Clara (6-3, 6-3) in the second round of the tournament. McIntosh will play Ruadhan O'Sullivan of Gonzaga in the round of 32 Friday.
Youssef Hassan defeated No. 17 seed Mikus Losbergs of Sacramento State (6-3, 6-3). Losbergs played the No. 1 spot for the Hornets last season and earned second team all-Big Sky Conference honors. Hassan advanced to the second round where he bested Tommy Lam of UC Davis (6-3, 6-4). Hassan will play No. 7 seed Sameer Kumar of Stanford in the round of 32 on Friday.
Mantas Bugailiskis bested Chris Brockstedt of San Francisco (6-3, 6-0) in his first round. Brockstedt was the runner-up in the Singles C Flight of the UCSB Invitational last weekend. Bugailiskis fell to No. 9 seed Gal Hakak of Washington (7-5, 6-3) in the second round.
Xander Veys defeated Max Heerinkx of Santa Clara (6-3, 6-0) before dropping a hard fought three-set match to No. 8 seed Jayson Amos of Oregon (3-6, 6-4, 6-1).
McIntosh and Hassan earned the No. 6 seed on the doubles side of the tournament and received a first round bye. The duo will play Garnett and Seby of Santa Clara on Friday at 8:30 a.m. PT.
Bugailiskis and Veys defeated Alderson and Nield of Seattle (8-4). The duo will face the No. 9 seed Zemaitelis and Losbergs of Sacramento State on Friday at 9:45 a.m. PT.
Doubles play will begin tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. PT and singles matches will follow.
