Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann named MW Defensive Player of the Week

Berwinkel-Kottmann racked up 13 saves, a 0.45 goals-against average and a shutout over the weekend
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Marie Berwinkel-Kottmann has been selected as the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week for matches played Sept. 26-Oct. 2, the conference announced Monday, following a 3-0 shutout over New Mexico on Sunday and a 1-1 draw against San Diego State on Friday.

"We are very happy for Marie and proud of our whole goalkeeping unit," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "They have all been called on this year in tough situations and have been well-prepared. The support amongst our goalkeepers for each other to be ready has been terrific and Marie's performances this weekend are a continuation of that."

Berwinkel-Kottmann played a key role in helping Fresno State extend its home unbeaten streak to five games, its longest such streak since winning five in a row in October 2013. She became the third Bulldog goalkeeper to earn a shutout this season, the first time in program history that has happened.

"The whole team deserves credit for protecting our goalkeeper," Zwaschka added. "We are pleased that Marie was ready when we needed her to be."

In 200 minutes over the weekend, Berwinkel-Kottmann racked up 13 saves, a 0.45 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage.

Last Friday, Berwinkel-Kottmann made her first start of the season against a San Diego State team that hadn't lost to the Bulldogs since Oct. 27, 2000. In the match, she tied her career-high with seven saves, including three in the second half, to send the game into overtime and result in the first tie between the teams in their 14 meetings.

On Sunday, Berwinkel-Kottmann recorded her fourth career shutout, made six saves, and earned her first win of the season. This was the Bulldogs' first-ever home win against the Lobos and their first win against New Mexico since Sept. 19, 2004.

Through three appearances this season, Berwinkel-Kottmann has notched 15 saves and owns a 0.73 goals-against average.

This is Berwinkel-Kottmann's first career weekly nod and the Bulldogs' third this season. Julia Glaser was named MW Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5 and Alex Best was selected as MW Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 19.

The three conference weekly accolades for the 'Dogs are their most in a season since earning six in 2013.

Fresno State travels to Utah State and Boise State this weekend before returning home to face Colorado State on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. PT. The Oct. 14 match includes free admission, but will be the only game this season that does not include free parking. That match will also air live on 1600 AM ESPN Deportes and the Mountain West Network.
