The Fresno State men's basketball team (1-0) enters Monday's home game versus Prairie View A&M on a nine-game home winning streak. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. PT inside the Save Mart Center. Tickets for Monday's game start at $10 with all Fresno State students, staff and faculty getting free admission to the game by showing their Fresno State ID on gameday.
Watson's versatility key as Bulldogs rise
Bulldogs' senior guard/forward Paul Watson - the 2013-14 Mountain West Freshman of the Year - gives Fresno State a versatile option on the wing and the post. Watson played both positions last season, primarily on the wing. Now in his fourth season at Fresno State, he has converted 41.4 percent (339-for-818) of his field goal attempts and 37.0 percent (141-for-381) of his 3-point field goal attempts. He has scored a total of 1,001 points as one of 32 1,000-point scorers in program history and sits six points away from tying Art Williams for 30th on the all-time scoring list.
'Dogs to unveil Mountain West championship banner
Fresno State will unveil its 2016 Mountain West championship banner in a pre-game ceremony before Monday's game versus Prairie View A&M. Last season, Fresno State won its 23rd conference title by winning its fifth-ever conference tournament title with a 68-63 victory over San Diego State in the Mountain West championship game to enter the NCAA Tournament on a nine-game win streak. This was the Bulldogs' first apperaance in the NCAA Tournament since 2001 and just the sixth in program history.
Russo shines in opening win over UTSA
Fresno State senior forward Cullen Russo scored a career-high 23 points with 10 rebounds for his sixth career double-double. Russo also posted a career-best 10 free throws on 12 attempts (83.3 percent) and had two assists, two blocks and a steal in the Bulldogs' 69-66 season opening win over UTSA. Russo also tied a career-high with six field goals and converted a career-best 60 percent from the field (6-for-10), when attempting at least 10 field goals in a game. With the 3-point win, Fresno State improved to 10-0 in its last 10 games decided by a single possession.
About the Prairie View A&M Panthers
The Prairie View A&M Panthers (0-1) are coached by first-year head coach Byron Smith, who was the Panthers' interim head coach for the final 12 games last season. The Panthers went 7-24 last season and are picked to finish 6th in the 10-team Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). PVAMU lost its opener 78-58 at Oregon State, who Fresno State will also play in Corvalis, Ore., when the Bulldogs visit the Beavers on Nov. 25.
