Bjorgvinsdottir leads `Dogs to open spring play

STANFORD, Calif. -- A foggy start that led to a sunny day at the Peg Barnard Invitational mirrored Saturday's action for the Fresno State women's golf team as the `Dogs finished strong after a slow start. Fresno State ended the first round in a tie for fifth place at 11-over-par (295) with Colorado on the par-71 Stanford University Golf Course.
The Bulldogs were 7-over-par as a team on the back nine (FS teed off No. 10) and rebounded by going 4-over-par on the front -- which included three of five individuals birding the final hole (No. 9) of the day.
Among those carding a birdie on No. 9 was Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir, who led Fresno State with a 2-over-par 73. The junior went 1-under on the front nine and 3-over on the back. She is tied for 14th overall individually.
There is a Fresno State three-way tie for 21st overall as Samantha Spencer, Mimi Ho and Kristen Simonsen each tallied a 3-over-par 74. Hannah Sodersten carded a 78 (+7) to round out the Bulldogs in action.
The `Dogs led the field with 58 pars, which included 14 apiece from Bjorgvinsdottir and Ho. Fresno State newcomer, Simonsen, led the team with four birdies in her first tournament playing for Fresno State.
The final round of the 36-hole Peg Barnard Invitational starts at 8 a.m. off the No. 1 tee and 8:25 a.m. off the No. 10 tee. Live scoring can be followed on birdiefire.com.
