Clayton climbs leaderboard with 4-straight birdies

WESLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - A string of four-straight birdies by Trevor Clayton down the stretch helped the junior to a second round 69, following an opening round 74, to place tied for 11th after Monday's action at the Southwestern Jones Invitational at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
In total, the Fresno State junior had 11 birdies over 36 holes on Monday, which included six during the second round that propelled Clayton to a 69. He owned one of 14 rounds carded in the 60's out of a 159 rounds of golf played at Monday's event.
Aided by Clayton's effort, Fresno State is in fifth place among the 15-team field at 13-over-par (589). They trail No. 6 USC (552), host-Pepperdine (565), No. 20 San Diego State (580) and Oregon (581). The Bulldogs first round 291 matched its spring-season-low, which was carded in the final round of its last tournament at the John Burns Invitational.
Other notables on Monday include Alex Lee and his first round 2-under-par 70, and Justin Avery going eagle on the par 5 493-yard sixth hole during the second round.
Lee (70-77) and Troix Tonkham (74-73) are tied for 24th overall. Avery (73-79) is tied for 47th and Greg Gildea (74-79) is tied for 51st.
The final round of the Southwestern Jones Invitational starts at 7:30 a.m. (PT) with tee times off holes one and 10. Live scoring can be followed on golfstat.com.
