FRESNO, Calif. - While the Fresno State baseball team takes their undefeated (9-0) record into Mountain West play this weekend at San Diego State, GoBulldogs.com recently caught up with sophomore left-handed pitcher Anthony Arias.
This season, Arias has already earned a Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honor when he helped Fresno State complete a season-opening series sweep over Creighton. This was Arias' second career Mountain West Pitcher of the Week and he is currently 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA and 10 strikeouts on the season.
We asked him an array of questions from the toughest part about being a student-athlete, to what MLB players he looked up to while growing up.
Q: What is your favorite memory so far being a Bulldog?
Arias: My freshman year when we swept Texas A&M at home when they were ranked No. 18 in the country.
Q: What is the hardest part about being a pitcher?
Arias: I would say the mental game is the toughest part. Having to stay focused on every pitch and producing good pitches.
Q: If you could play another position which one would it be?
Arias: I would play first base because then I wouldn't have to do much.
Q: What MLB players did you look up to growing up?
Arias: When I was younger I wanted to be a hitter so I looked up to Barry Bonds. Since I am a left-handed pitcher, I also liked Barry Zito growing up.
Q: What is the toughest part about being a student-athlete?
Arias: Staying on top of your schoolwork. When you are traveling and playing a lot of games you can't just focus on baseball. You have to remember that you are a student first then an athlete.
Q: What have been some of your favorite stadiums to play in besides Beiden?
Arias: My favorite stadiums were at TD Ameritrade in Omaha when we played Creighton and last year at Oregon State.
Q: If you could have a super power what would it be?
Arias: I would want to be able to read people's minds because then I would be one step ahead of the game.
Q: What is your favorite pump up song to listen to before games?
Arias: Eye of the Tiger by Survivor which is my walk out song.
Q: Where is your favorite place on campus?
Arias: The library is a peaceful place to hangout.
Q: Where is your favorite place to eat in Fresno?
Arias: My two favorite places to eat are Deli Delicious and Don Pepe.
