Clayton, Gildea lead 'Dogs at Northwest Classic

CANBY, Ore. -- Fresno State continued its upward swing as they climbed into a 10th place tie at the Airwaves Adventures Northwest Classic at Willamette Valley Country Club after Tuesday's final round -- a day that also included the final few holes of the second round after it was cut short due to darkness brought on by Monday's rain delays. Trevor Clayton and Greg Gildea shared the 54-hole team-low at 5-over-par (221), respectively, as they tied for 31st individually.
"It was good to see we improved each round this week," said head coach Chad Spencer. "It wasn't our best, but in those weather conditions it was just a tough tournament. But now we move ahead, regroup and turn our focus to Stanford, a familiar course that we are looking forward to playing on this short turnaround."
Despite the soggy course conditions, the Bulldogs improved their position on the team leaderboard after each round of the Northwest Classic following a slow start. They went from 12th, to 11th, before finishing tied for 10th with Washington State. All while the 87-person field individual average score rose from a round one 74.25, to a round two 74.72, and a final round 74.81.
Clayton and Alex Lee fired a pair of 1-over-par 73 round three scores to lead Fresno State on Tuesday. Clayton posted four birdies on the final day and ended the tournament with a team-best 11 -- the top birdie count at the Northwest Classic was 13. Lee caught fire on the front-nine as he carded all three of his final round birdies on the front and went 2-under-par on that stretch.
Gildea, who led the Bulldogs on Monday with a tournament team-best 2-under-par 70 in the first round, carded a 4-over-par 76 final round score. He rose in the standings from a tie for 14th, to a tie for 33rd alongside Clayton.
Cody Riecks fired his third eagle of the season on the 14th hole Tuesday, a 481-yard par 5 hole. That backed up a birdie on hole No. 13 that helped him fire a 2-under-par back-nine. The sophomore closed the final round with a 3-over-par 75. He placed tied for 46th.
The Bulldogs will continue their spring break road trip by traveling south to the Bay Area from Oregon for The Goodwin, a three-day tournament hosted by Stanford, March 24-26 (Thursday-Saturday). Live scoring for The Goodwin can be followed on golfstat.com.
