Women's golf finishes sixth in Hawai'i

KANE`OHE, Hawai`i -- The Fresno State women's golf team secured a sixth place finish at the Dr. Donnis Invitational by posting its second-straight 295 during the final round on Wednesday at Kane`ohe Klipper Golf Course in Oahu. Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir and Kristin Simonsen led the way, each firing an even-par 72 for their respective third rounds.
"It was a great opportunity to play in Hawai'i this week," said head coach Emily Milberger-Loftin. "We certainly had a dissapointing start on Tuesday, but I'm very proud of the way the ladies bounced back and put two solid rounds together to finish out the event and grab sixth place."
Bjorgvinsdottir claimed the 'Dogs best finish, taking a tie for 13th behind a 54-hole 4-over-par 220 (76-72-72). Over the last two tournaments, Bjorgvinsdottir owns a 71.80 scoring average and has been Fresno State's top finisher in each event; she also took over the top spot as the Bulldogs' lowest season scoring average (73.20) leader. She led the 'Dogs with 10 birdies at the Dr. Donnis Invitational.
Simonsen, the 'Dogs No. 2 finisher, earned a tie for 21st. The freshman improved her score each day on the course by going 77-74-72. Simonsen was 7-over-par (223) for the tournament. The par 3 holes were her strong suit as she owned the best individual mark at 1-under-par on the four par 3's the course had to offer.
Hannah Sodersten carded her best score of the tournament (75) Wednesday, while Yifei Wang posted a 4-over-par 76 to round out the Bulldogs four scores used for the final round. Wang placed tied for 36th (77-75-76=228) and Sodersten finished tied for 57th (80-79-75=234).
Fresno State's schedule takes them to Oxford, Miss. next for the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate. It is a three-day tournament, April 1-3, and will be the Bulldogs final regular season event prior to the Mountain West Championships, April 18-20.
