Mountain West Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the third straight week, Fresno State baseball claimed an individual Mountain West weekly honor as this week a pair of Bulldogs were honored by the conference office. Jimmy Lambert earned Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honors for the second straight week and Brody Russell was named the Mountain West Player of the Week.
Fresno State has now claimed all three MW Pitcher of the Week honors in 2016 after Lambert won it last week and Anthony Arias claimed the honor the first week. Lambert tossed seven innings and struck out a career-high nine in Saturday's 10-5 win at San Diego State. He limited the Aztecs to five hits, one unearned run and issued no walks as the 'Dogs won their first series at SDSU since joining the Mountain West.
On the season, the junior from San Dimas leads the MW in wins (3), ERA (0.40), innings pitched (22.1), ranks second in opposing batting average (.190) and is tied for third in strikeouts with 16.
Helping spark an offense that has outscored its opponent 79-44 on the season, Russell went 6-for-17 on the week with four runs scored, six RBIs, one double, one triple and one home run.
Getting at least one hit and one RBI in all four contests, he ended the week with a .400 on-base percentage and a .706 slugging percentage as the 'Dogs got off to a 11-0 start to the season to match the best start in program history.
In Friday's dramatic 3-2 win in 10 innings over the Aztecs, Russell was a season-high 3-for-5, scored two runs and hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 10th inning. He hit his first career triple and added a pair of RBIs on Saturday and closed out the week with a two-run single on Sunday that put the 'Dogs ahead 3-2 at the time.
This is Russell's second career MW Player of the Week honor after earning it once as a junior in 2015.
The Bulldogs are back in action this weekend traveling to third-ranked Texas A&M out of the SEC for a three-game series beginning Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Blue Bell Park. All of this weekend's action against the Aggies can be viewed on SEC Network +.
