FRESNO, Calif. -- The Fresno State women's golf team claimed its third-straight Fresno State Classic team championship at San Joaquin Country Club on Tuesday. The `Dogs fired a 1-over-par 577 to win by an eight stoke margin over runner-up Boise State.
"I'm very proud of our team," said head coach Emily Milberger-Loftin. "We overcame some hurdles this week between the rain and course conditions and persevered to keep the Fresno State Classic championship at home. Today we had a slow start, but really picked up some good rhythm going into the final stretch. It was exciting to see how the ladies hung in there and finished strong."
Fresno State's top four golfers went 3-under-par, collectively, over the final six holes to secure its win -- the team score takes the four lowest scores of five. The `Dogs carded a final round 3-over-par 291 to pair with Monday's 2-under-par 286. It was the second-lowest 36-hole team score in program history.
Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir led Fresno State with back-to-back subpar rounds (68-71) -- both scores were team lows for rounds one and two. The junior tied for second place at 5-under-par (139), while notching a team-high nine birdies.
"It was really exciting to see Gudrun finish as a runner-up," said Milberger-Loftin. "She played some solid golf at a course she's very comfortable with. It was great to see her effort awarded with her best finish this season."
Kristin Simonsen, one of two Bulldogs to place inside the top five, finished the Fresno State Classic at 1-over-par (71-74=145). The freshman took fifth place at the classic, her best finish as a Bulldog. Since joining the team in January, Simonsen has improved her standing at each tournament she's played - T-15th at Peg Barnard Invitational (Feb. 13-14) and 10th at the Gold Rush Invitational (Feb. 22-23).
Mimi Ho and Yifei Wang tied for 12th place, respectively. The duo carded identical round one 75's and round two 73's, which equated to a pair of 4-over-par 148 tournament scores.
Hannah Sodersten shot a 6-over-par 78 on Tuesday, tying a personal-high for a single round this season. She finished tied for 25th at 6-over-par 150 (72-78). The senior continues to lead Fresno State with its lowest scoring average (72.64) after eight tournaments.
Joanna Kim led a group of four Bulldogs playing as individuals. Kim recorded an 11-over-par 155 (76-79), and was followed by teammates Samantha Spencer (80-78=158), Kaitlyn Ellis (86-79=165) and Kayla Luis (82-84=166).
"I'm excited for the entire team," Milberger-Loftin said. "We gained a lot of experience and I'm looking forward to taking this momentum to Hawai'i for our next tournament."
Fresno State competes at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, hosted by Hawai'i, on March 22-23 next. The regular season slate concludes April 1-3 at the Ole Miss Rebel Intercollegiate.
