EL MACERO, Calif. -- The Fresno State men's golf team finished the El Macero Classic on Sunday in sixth place (312-293-289=894) amongst the 15-team field, its top finish since the spring opener at the Farms Collegiate Invitational. The Bulldog were led by Trevor Clayton (81-69-72=222), who tied for 14th individually.
Clayton shot par or better for the second-straight day. He followed his round two 69 with an even-par 72 to cap the El Macero Classic. The junior rebounded from an opening day 81 to finish in a tie for 14th after being tied for 65th after Friday's first round.
Clayton's then-tournament best 69 was edged out by a 4-under-par 68 by Kevin Murphy of Oregon State on Sunday. Murphy's final round advanced him into a playoff with Ryan Book (TCU), but was defeated by Book on the first playoff hole. The two shared an even-par 216 after 54 holes.
Troix Tonkam carded the low-round of the day on Sunday for Fresno State. The redshirt junior's 2-under-par 70 was his best round of the spring season. He went 1-under-par on the front-nine, and matched that on the back. As a result, he moved up 32 positions on the individual leaderboard to finish tied for 29th.
Fresno State used scores by Alex Lee (73) and Justin Avery (74) to round out its team scoring on Sunday. It was a tournament-low for Lee. Avery's low was 73, carded Saturday.
Greg Gildea, who was the top Bulldog finisher after rounds one and two, finished tied for 20th behind Clayton. Gildea shot arguably the most consistent golf of the tournament for Fresno State as he went 74-75-75 to complete the tournament 8-over-par (224), playing as an individual.
The Mountain West Championships await the Bulldogs next. The league will host the tournament April 22-24 in Tucson, Ariz. at Omni Tucson National.
