FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Tim DeRuyter announced the hiring of Thomas Stallworth to lead the strength and conditioning program for the Bulldog football program on Wednesday. Stallworth will be the second strength coach to anchor DeRuyter's Bulldogs during his tenure after the departure of Joey Boese to Illinois.
"I'm elated to announce the hiring of our new head football strength coach, Thomas Stallworth," said DeRuyter. "His knowledge, passion, and drive to impact student athletes' lives is clearly evident and I'm excited to have him here working with our players. This is a critical position on our coaching staff and I know Coach Stallworth will challenge our guy's every day to strive for excellence in all areas of their lives. We welcome him, his wife Ingrid, and his children India and Thomas to the Valley."
Stallworth brings more than 10 years of experience in strength and conditioning to Fresno State, which includes stops in the ACC, Big 12 and SEC. He was most recently the associate director of strength and conditioning for the Texas Tech football team.
The former Tennessee Volunteers (1997-2001) linebacker spent nearly eight years leading two different strength and conditioning programs -- South Carolina State (2004-08) and Grambling State (2008-11) -- before making the jump to Power 5 football as an assistant strength coach for Mississippi State in 2012.
While at Mississippi State (2012-2015), Stallworth worked under Dan Mullen during what was arguably the team's best season (2014) in school history that culminated in Mississippi State's first Orange Bowl berth since 1941. That team ranked as high as No. 1 in the Associated Press poll in 2014, a squad quarterbacked by Dak Prescott, and recorded the programs first 10-win season in 15 years.
Stallworth moved on from Mississippi State after three seasons to North Carolina State (2015-16) for one full calendar year. In January 2016, Stallworth joined the Red Raiders football staff before taking over as the head football strength and conditioning coach for the Bulldogs under DeRuyter.
Stallworth is currently pursuing his doctorate in sports psychology and sports science at the University of the Rockies. He obtained his bachelors in sports management in 2001 and masters in sports administration in 2004, both from the University of Tennessee where he played football. He is also a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
