Clayton eying MW Championship

TUCSON, Ariz. - Following an opening day 6-under-par 66, Fresno State's Trevor Clayton carded an even-par 72 on Saturday at the Mountain West Men's Golf Championship to stay within striking distance of the individual title. The junior is two strokes back from Nevada's Corey Eddings who holds the outright lead at 8-under-par.
Clayton leads the 55-person field with 12 birdies, he added four to his total during the second round. He got there Saturday by carding birdies on three of his first five holes, but cooled off as he went 3-over-par on the next 13 holes.
Justin Avery matched Clayton's even-par 72 for the low-Bulldog round of the day. Subsequently, he joins Clayton in the individual top 10 - in eighth place. Avery owns a 3-under-par 141 after 36 holes.
The other three Bulldogs in action were over-par in the second round - Greg Gildea (75), Troix Tonkham (77) and Alex Lee (78).
Fresno State dropped into third place after the second round and trail New Mexico by six stokes following an 8-over-par 296. The Bulldogs held the lead by five strokes entering Saturday's round after firing a MW Championship all-time team-low 13-under-par 275 in the first round.
The Mountain West Men's Golf Championship concludes Sunday with the third round and final round. Fresno State will tee off every eight minutes starting at 9:40 a.m., with team-leader Clayton going last at 10:12 a.m. Live results can be found at Golfstat.com.
