FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State freshman Kristin Simonsen was named an at-large selection by the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee on Monday to compete at the Stanford Regional, May 5-7. She was one of 24 individuals and 72 teams - including 28 automatic qualifiers from championship teams - selected to participate in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Regionals, which will be dispersed across four regional sites with 18 teams and six individuals at each one.
Simonsen, who joined the Bulldogs in January, owned a 73.88 scoring average over 16 rounds during the spring and will tee off regionals where she opened her collegiate career, the Stanford University Golf Course. Her first event was the Peg Barnard Invitational, Feb. 13-14, an event she led Fresno State by shooting a 5-over-par 147. She placed 15th out of 70 in the tournament and was later named the Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Week for her effort.
Fresno State used all 16 rounds Simonsen carded as part of the 5-count-4 event format (best four individual scores used for team total) during the spring season. Her low-round was 1-under-par 71, accomplished twice. Last time out, the Norway native placed tied for 10th at the Mountain West Women's Golf Championship - leading the 'Dogs to a third-place finish.
Simonsen is the fifth Bulldog to make an individual appearance in program history, and the third under third-year head coach Emily Milberger-Loftin - having Madchen Ly earn back-to-back bids as a junior and senior (2014-15).
The four 54-hole regional competitions will be played over three days to determine the participants of the championship finals that are set to be hosted in Eugene, Oregon. The low six teams and the low three individuals not on those teams will advance to the finals.
