Mattson leads `Dogs off at MW Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. - Thanks to closing the day with a win in the 200-meter dash, Fresno State freshman Jestena Mattson moved up to 10th place in the heptathlon, after four events, on the opening day of the Mountain West Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Mattson, the only Bulldog in action on the first day of the championships, earned 2,909 points in the heptathlon. Three events remain (long jump, javelin and 800 meters), which will resume Thursday at 4 p.m.
Mattson earned two season bests, one in the 200m that she won with a 25.00-second time, and also in the high jump by topping out at 1.64m (5-4.50). She earned 887 points in the 200m dash and grabbed 783 points in the high jump, placing fifth.
The two other events scored on the day, the 100m hurdles and shot put, Mattson competed for the first time in each this season. She placed 15th in both events.
Mattson ran a 15.69-second 100-meter hurdles, grabbing 753 points, and registered a 9.33m (30-7.50) mark in the shot put to earn 486 points.
In addition to the conclusion of the heptathlon, as well as the decathlon on Thursday, the men's and women's 10,000-meter will be the first and last final of the second day of action. Fresno State will send Matt Kwiatkowski and Cooper Gill to the track to represent the Bulldogs; Kwiatkowski posted the No. 10 time (30:19.97) in school history earlier this season.
Like Wednesday, admission and parking will be free. Tickets will be required for Friday and Saturday and can be purchased online, by calling 559-278-DOGS or by visiting the box office at Veterans Memorial Stadium at the time of the event.
