Sears takes MW long jump title on day 3

CLOVIS, Calif. - Fresno State saw its first champion of the 2016 Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships crowned on Friday as senior Je'Nia Sears won the long jump with a 6.56m (21'-6.25") leap. It was her second MW outdoor championship since earning her first long jump title in 2014.
After three days, seven events have been scored on both the men's and women's side, with the fourth and final day looming with 14 events left to be scored on Saturday. The Bulldog women own 10 points from Sears' first place finish while the men are still looking for their first points.
On Friday, four field events and the steeplechase were scored for both the men's and women's teams and six qualifying track events took place for each side. Eight Bulldogs competed their way past the qualifying rounds, six Fresno State women and two men, in addition to Sears' championship on the field side.
The Bulldogs qualified three of its four entries in the women's 400m. Nailah Harris-Murillo led the group by clocking the top time overall and setting a new personal record at 54.99 seconds. Teammates Njeri Omawahleh (55.31) and Dezirae Johnson (55.49) also moved on to Saturday's final.
With a time of 59.15, Kyra Johnson won the second heat of the 400m hurdles and had the overall top time that qualified for Saturday's final. She will be looking to repeat as a Mountain West Champion in the event.
Omawahleh and Shakira Lewis both made it past Friday's prelims in the 200m dash. Omawahleh won the second heat at 23.45 seconds, which tied her existing school record. Lewis set a personal best with a 23.93-second time, it was the eighth-best time of the 19 runners in the field.
In addition to the 200m duo that qualified, Chastity Fellows (24.52) and Kiah Sumler (24.84) both set personal bests.
In the men's 800m, Uriel Cabanas and Esteban Vega each qualified for Saturday's final. Cabanas placed seventh with a time of 1:53.16 and Vega was ninth, tailing him with a time of 1:53.45.
Despite not qualifying, all three Bulldog men set new personal records in the 100m dash, between the trio of Eric Fernandez (10.99), Jordan Booth (11.05) and Joshua Biagtan (11.25).
The field events resume at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday while the track events get underway at 5 p.m. For both the men and women, four field events are set to be scored and 10 track finals will determine point-takers.
