FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's soccer head coach Brian Zwaschka has been named interim head coach of the Fresno Fuego of the USL Premier Development League (PDL) after Sean Lanigan resigned from the position due to personal reasons, the Fuego announced early Tuesday.
"I want to wish Coach Lanigan the best in his future endeavors and thank the Fresno Fuego for this opportunity," Zwaschka said. "The main concern right now is helping everyone move forward with games having already started and making sure that we keep stability in the organization."
The Fresno Fuego are a men's amateur soccer team that competes in the Southwest Division of the PDL and are 1-1 so far this season. The Fuego have five home games remaining through July 2.
"I also want to reassure Fresno State fans that my time with the Fuego will not take away from my work with the Bulldogs," Zwaschka added. "Now that our student-athletes have completed spring training, this is an opportunity for me to get more match experience and keep working on ideas that I have been developing for the Fresno State team, just in a different setting. It's a terrific experience for me to get better professionally."
Zwaschka believes that this will help grow the awareness of soccer in the community.
"Fresno State already has a great relationship with the Fuego and their fans," Zwaschka said. "We had a massive crowd against Cal Poly last season thanks in part to the Fresno Fire Squad, the supporting group of the Fuego. I hope that this only strengthens our relationship."
