ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Top-seeded Fresno State saw its run at the Mountain West Tournament and season come to an end on Friday afternoon falling 25-6 to third-seeded Nevada at Santa Ana Star Field in an eight-inning run-shortened game.
Winning its first Mountain West Championship since joining the conference in 2013 this season, Fresno State won its first outright regular season conference title since 2010 and finished the season with 36 wins to complete its winningest season since 2011.
After dropping a heartbreaking 9-7 game to Air Force on Thursday in the first game of the double-elimination tournament, the Bulldogs looked to bounce back against a Nevada squad playing its third game in less than 24 hours.
The 'Dogs were able to collect 13 hits in the game as junior outfielder Austin Guibor matched his career-best with three hits falling a triple shy of hitting for the cycle going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Junior outfielder Jake Stone also matched his career-best with his seventh career three-hit contest hitting his team-leading 18th double of the season and scored two runs.
Playing in his 217th career game as a Bulldog, senior Kevin Viers went 2-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBIs. Viers ends his Fresno State career with the seventh-most games played in program history.
Scoring first for the 40th time this season, the Bulldogs jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after the first inning. Stone and sophomore first baseman Aaron Arruda jumped on base with a pair of two-out singles followed by an RBI single to right center by Viers brang home Stone for the day's first run. Junior third baseman Jesse Medrano kept the 'Dogs offense going with an RBI single to right center to bring home Arruda.
Nevada (36-22) responded in a big way in the second inning scoring seven runs off Bulldog starter Jimmy Lambert. The Mountain West Co-Pitcher of the Year allowed only 20 earned runs in 68.0 innings over 10 MW starts in the regular season, but surrendered seven earned runs in the second inning. The Wolf Pack tacked on two more runs in the third to push the right-hander out of the game after 2.2 innings for his shortest outing of the season.
The 'Dogs attempted to mount a comeback in the fourth and fifth innings scoring three runs to cut the deficit to 9-6 getting an RBI sacrifice bunt from junior outfielder Ryan Dobson in the fourth and a leadoff home run by Guibor and an RBI triple by Viers in the fifth.
With senior reliever Brennon Williams holding the Wolf Pack to one run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth, Nevada added three runs in the seventh off senior Dylan Lee to extend its lead to 13-6 before a 12-run, 11-hit eighth inning for Nevada closed the door on the game.
In addition to Viers, Williams and Lee playing their final games as Bulldogs, the 'Dogs will also lose seniors Brody Russell, a first-team All-MW selection and Tim Borst, a second-team All-MW pitcher. The trio of Borst, Viers and Russell, who each arrived at Fresno State in the fall of 2012, combined for 118 wins over their four years as Bulldogs.
