EUGENE, Ore. - Twelve members from the Fresno State track and field team got one last chance to hit the track in front of the Mountain West Outdoor Track and Field Championships next week in Clovis, and it was at the historic Hayward Field for the Oregon Twilight in Eugene, Ore. at that. Oregon will host the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the fourth-straight year in June.
Kamara Biawogi started the meet with one of three wins for the Bulldogs on the day. Biawogi clocked a season-best 52.41-second time in the 400-meter hurdles. Uriel Cabanas (800m) and Je'Nia Sears (long jump) picked up the 'Dogs other two wins.
Cabanas charged hard over the final 200 meters to pass teammate Esteban Vega for the win. Cabanas timed in at 1:52.11 while Vega registered a 1:55.26. Vega led the majority of the race, but lost gas down the stretch.
Sears' mark in the long jump was 6.25m (20-06.25), the best of five attempts coming on her third jump.
In the women's 400m, Kyra Johnson (55.86) and Nailah Harris-Murillo finished third and fourth, but were the first and second best collegiate finishers in a section that saw Monica Hargrove, 2006 IAAF World Indoor Championships silver medalist, win the race.
Similarly, Dezirae Johnson fell to professional Treniere Moser in the 800m Invitational. Johnson clocked a 2:10.98.
The Bulldogs throws team was represented by Kayla Hopkins, Yazmin Torres and Vanja Spaic on Friday. Hopkins and Torres both competed in the discus and shot put, while javelin specialist Spaic concentrated on her event.
Hopkins edged out Torres in both events – Hopkins tossed the discus 49.93 meters to Torres' 46.46m throw and Hopkins tossed a 13.62m shot put to Torres' 12.93m mark. Torres though, set a PR with her distance in the shot put.
Spaic recorded a 43.03m javelin throw on her second attempt, her best of six throws.
Fresno State will have a few days off until the Mountain West Championships, May 11-14. The 'Dogs will host the event for the first time since joining the league. All four days will be at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis, Calif. on the campus of Buchanan High School.
