FRESNO, Calif. - Two late-inning runs by San Diego State turned out to the difference on Friday night at Pete Beiden Field as the Aztecs defeated Fresno State 4-2.
Only the third Mountain West home loss of the season and fifth home loss overall, Fresno State (30-17, 17-8 MW) was held to seven hits and two runs scoring in only one inning.
The only Bulldog to register multiple hits in the game was freshman left fielder Zach Ashford who went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles. Sophomore catcher Nick Warren got the 'Dogs lone extra-base hit with an RBI double down the left field line in the second inning.
San Diego State (14-30, 6-14 MW) countered with 10 hits winning only its second MW road game of the season. Sophomore right fielder Tyler Adkison went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore center fielder Denz'l Chapman added two hits and scored a run.
The Aztecs struck first with a pair of runs of unearned runs in the second inning after a throwing error by the Bulldogs allowed Adkison and designated hitter Spencer Thornton to advance to second and third with no outs. An RBI groundout by third baseman Andrew Brown brought home Adkison and a single down the left field line by first baseman Jordan Verdon drove in Thornton to give the visitors an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulldogs responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as junior right fielder Austin Guibor hit a one-out single to extend his on-base streak to six games. Sophomore third baseman McCarthy Tatum was hit by a pitch and the pair moved up a base on one of three balks in the game by Aztec starter Dominic Purpura.
Sophomore shortstop Korby Batesole followed with a two-out single to shortstop to drive home Guibor and move Tatum to third base. Warren followed with his third double of the season driving in Tatum to tie the game at 2-2.
After three scoreless innings from the third to the fifth, SDSU added the eventual game-winning run in the sixth on a two-out RBI single up the middle by catcher Dean Nevarez scoring Thornton from second base.
The 'Dogs attemped to tie the game in the eighth as Ashford led off with a single and moved to second on a groundout by Scott Silva. A single to center field by junior outfielder Jake Stone followed as Ashford attempted to advance home on the play, but was gunned down at the plate by Aztec center fielder Chapman. Sophomore first baseman Aaron Arruda followed launching a deep fly ball to left field that barely missed leaving the yard by only a matter of feet as Aztec left fielder Chase Calabuig was able to haul it in.
The Aztecs added an insurance run in the ninth off senior relief pitcher Tim Borst with a two-out single through the left side by Adkison as the 'Dogs went down in order in the ninth.
Starting pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas, the MW leader in ERA, innings pitched, opposing batting average, strikeouts and earned runs allowed, suffered only his fourth loss of the season tossing seven innings, allowing seven hits, three runs, one earned and struck out nine. It was his fourth game this season with nine or more strikeouts and now has 88 on the season.
