FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State track and field team is hosting the 2016 Mountain West Championships at Veterans Memorial Stadium, May 11-14. It will be the first championship event the Bulldogs will have had the honor to host since the 2007 WAC Championships at Warmerdam Field.
The four-day meet will showcase 11 women's programs and seven men's programs from the Mountain West. The conference, which Fresno State joined in 2013, sports 179 performances that rank within the nation's top 100 this season, including 12 by the Bulldogs.
On stage will be three-time NCAA qualifier and local product Je'Nia Sears (Edison High School), who set the Fresno State school record in the long jump and holds the third-longest jump in the country this season. Annemarie Schwanz, who set the Fresno State school record in both the 1500-meter and 5000-meter runs this year, will be a name to watch. Her 1500-meter time of 4:14.89 is the fifth fastest in the NCAA this spring while she ranks in the top 30 in the 5000-meters. Another name to look for is Kyra Johnson, the Fresno State record holder in the 400-meter hurdles, owns the 28th-best time in the country.
Veterans Memorial Stadium is regarded as one of the top facilities on the west coast. The 10,000 seat facility that also hosted two regular season events for the Bulldogs in 2016, recently took on upgrades that include a new track surface and new warm-up lanes for the track athletes and an improved warm-up area for the field athletes.
The long jump and triple jump pits were moved to offer longer runways, while allowing the enhancement of the pole vault approach by doing so. In addition, a new discus and hammer cage was installed to help the throwers. All improvements that will provide a top notch event for the Mountain West Championships as well as the USA Track and Field Junior Outdoor Championship in June.
