Transfer Xander Veys will join Fresno State for the 2016-17 season.
FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State men's head tennis coach Luke Shields announced the signing of Xander Veys. The transfer from UNC-Wilmington will have two years of eligibility remaining.
Veys, originally from Mortsel, Belgium before making the move to Wilmington, N.C., was ranked as high as No. 84 in the World Junior ITF rankings before joining the Seahawks. Throughout his juniors career, he was ranked in the top three in Belgium, including holding the No. 1 spot for a time. Veys also found himself ranked inside TennisEurope's top five.
"I am happy to welcome Xander to the team," Shields said. "He is a great student and a very experienced tennis player who was the top junior in Belgium and a top 100 in the ITF junior rankings. I think he will come in right away and make a big impact to this team. When he finds the joy of the game, the sky is the limit."
Veys has won a Grade 3 ITF event, been a two-time finalist in Grade 2 ITF events, and was semifinalist in a prestigious Grade 2 ITF in Holland. The 6-foot-2 junior was a second-team All-CAA selection during his freshman season at UNCW.
