FRESNO, Calif. – The staff at College Sports Madness has selected its 2016 Mountain West Preseason All-Conference team and named Fresno State redshirt freshman quarterback Chason Virgil its Freshman of the Year.
Â
In addition, Bulldog defenders Nathan Madsen and Daquawn Brown were both named to CSM's preseason All-MW second-team.
Â
Virgil enrolled at Fresno State in the spring 2015 semester as a true freshman out of Mesquite, Texas. He played in the first three games as a freshman last fall, starting in week 3 against No. 21 Utah before being lost for the season due to injury. He was awarded a medical hardship waiver by the NCAA for the year.
Â
In his time on the field, Virgil showed the Red Wave glimpses of his potential. He entered the week 2 contest at No. 14 Ole Miss in the second quarter of that game and connected on his first seven passes, which went for 83 yards and one touchdown.
Â
He threw for 140 total yards on 12-of-18 passing with two TDs and two interceptions in that game at Ole Miss.
Â
In his start against No. 21 Utah the following week, Virgil threw for 97 yards before being knocked out of the game with the injury. In all he was 31-of-56 passing for 298 yards with three TDs in 2015.
Â
Madsen has played in 25 career games with 15 starts in his first two seasons for the Bulldogs. Last season playing nose guard, he made 19 tackles and had 3.5 tackles for a loss.
Â
For his career Madsen has 30 tackles, 5.5 tackles for a loss, two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. He is expected to move back to his natural defensive end position this August when fall camp begins.
Â
Brown sat out the 2015 season in accordance with NCAA transfer regulations. He played as a freshman and sophomore at Washington State in 2013 and 2014, collecting freshman All-America honors in 2013.
Â
Fresno State reports for fall camp on Aug. 3 and will hold its first of 29 practices before the season opener on Aug. 4.
Â
The Bulldogs open the 2016 campaign, the fifth under head coach Tim DeRuyter, on Sept. 3 at Nebraska.
