FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's soccer team took its first major step in preparation of the 2016 season in a 1-0 exhibition loss to Sacramento State on Friday night. 12 different Bulldogs got shots off and fans got a look at six newcomers, including striker Julia Glaser from Germany, who got a starting nod.
Â
"Everything that we've been trying to execute was good up until the finishing touch," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We'll make sure to review the video and tighten up some things."
Â
The 'Dogs and Hornets went into halftime scoreless, despite Fresno State getting off 10 shots, including five shots on goal. However, just four minutes into the second half, Sacramento State senior Jennifer Lum found the back of the net after receiving a quick pass from junior Kayla Collins.
Â
"It was a good step in the learning process," Fresno State senior captain Alyssa Holsworth said. "We definitely have some things to work on, but I think we did a good job connecting all over the field, we just couldn't seem to get it in the net."
Â
The Bulldogs owned advantages in shots (20-4), shots on goal (10-1) and corner kicks (12-3). Redshirt freshman Racine Babb came off the bench to lead the 'Dogs with three shots, while five others recorded two shots each.
Â
Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Theroux played the entire game, allowing Sacramento State's lone shot on goal into the net.
Â
The Bulldogs will play an intrasquad scrimmage on Sunday at 6 p.m. PT at the Fresno State Soccer and Lacrosse Field before opening their season against UC Santa Barbara on Aug. 19.
