FRESNO, Calif. – The Bulldog family lost one their beloved this past weekend, former women's tennis student-athlete Bruna Paes. She graduated cum laude with a bachelor's of science in business administration after playing for four seasons under former head coach Simon Thibodeau.
Â
The native of Rondonópolis, Brazil made a large impact on her teammates and the Fresno State community.
Â
Two of her past Bulldog teammates, Melanie Gloria and Danon Teeters (formally Beatty) made the following statements:
Â
"As one of my best friends and former teammates, I loved and cared for Bruna like my own sister," said Gloria. "She was always full of life and charisma. She had the biggest heart. She was the teammate and friend that everyone wished they had. She left way too soon and I just hope she knows how much we love her and miss her."
Â
"Bruna lived every day to the fullest and was grateful for everything Fresno State had given her," said Teeters. "She always was a team player and loved to work hard. She was the life of every event and always brought joy with her wherever she went. She was a better person than most and didn't deserve to leave us all so early."
Â
Gloria, Teeters and Paes were all a part of the 2009 senior class.
Â
After an amateur career playing for the Brazil Junior National team, Paes earned 60 singles wins in her career at Fresno State and was a member of a team that won four consecutive WAC Championships. Paes' teams reached the NCAA Round of 16 during each of her four seasons - no other senior class in program history can claim that.
