SAN ANTONIO - Off to its best 10-game start since 2002, the Fresno State volleyball team completed a three-match sweep at the Incarnate Word Cardinal Classic on Saturday afternoon sweeping Incarnate Word at the McDermott Convocation Center. The 'Dogs improve to 8-2 on the season and won individual sets over the Cardinals 25-22, 25-20, 25-22.
"I am really proud of Aleisha Coates and Maggie Eppright for their consistency this weekend," said head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell on the play of the pair of Bulldog seniors as the 'Dogs swept all three opponents this weekend at the UIW Cardinal Classic.Â
"Aleisha looked like a legit outside hitter today," added Netherby-Sewell. "She made good choices and handled the out-of-system stuff well. Maggie has been our little hoover and is always where she needs to be. We had a great weekend taking care of business and being 8-2 is a solid start. Incarnate Word gave us a fun match and they are a well-coached, passionate team that kept coming at us. We were able to stay pretty steady siding out and earning small point runs where we needed them. It was a great team effort."
Coates recorded her ninth double-figure kill performance leading the 'Dogs with a season-high 18 kills and added five digs and two solo blocks. Three other Bulldogs had five or more kills apiece as the 'Dogs finished with 44 compared to 29 for Incarnate Word (4-6). Maggie Eppright had her ninth double-figure dig performance with 18 digs and Madelyn Halteman recorded 38 assists.
Coates earned the UIW Cardinal Classic MVP honors while Eppright was selected to the All-Tournament team.
"It is a complete blessing to be named tournament MVP," said Coates after picking up her second tournament MVP honor this season. "I am very happy and proud of the way our team came together and fought through the weekend to go 3-0."
The 'Dogs were pushed to the limit in all three sets as they took a narrow 15-14 lead midway through the first set, before back-to-back kills from Coates pushed the lead to three (18-15). Incarnate Word refused to go away continuing to attack the net and tied up the set at 20 apiece before two attack errors and three kills, including two more by Coates, gave the 'Dogs a 25-22 win.
Â
The offense got going a bit sooner in set two as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-7 lead after a kill by Brielle Hefner. A 12-8 run by UIW cut the 'Dogs lead to a pair (21-19) before a pair of kills by Aubrey Folk, an ace by Jacqueline Hutcheson and an attack error sealed a 25-20 win.
The third and final set was a hard-fought affair as the score was tied at 12 before three straight points for the 'Dogs gave them a lead they would not surrender. A kill by Haile Watson pushed the lead to 21-16 as a pair of kills by Carly Scarbrough and one more by Folk allowed the Bulldogs to complete the sweep.
Fresno State returns to Fresno for an exhibition match on Monday evening against Fresno Pacific at the Save Mart Center set for 7 p.m. The game will be High School Night as all students with a valid ID get into the game for free as well as free parking for all fans.
