'Dogs sweep trio of Texas foes to capture UIW Cardinal Classic title
Fresno State extended its perfect road record to start to the season improving to 7-0 away from Fresno as the 'Dogs swept all three opponents on their way to the Incarnate Word Cardinal Classic title over the weekend.
The Bulldogs handled Texas Southern on Friday topping the Tigers 25-12, 25-19, 25-10. The 'Dogs had a season-high .455 attack percentage as they finished with 44 kills. Aleisha Coates led the way with 12 kills, while Haile Watson added nine. Maggie Eppright had 11 digs and three service aces while Madelyn Halteman and Brooke Legaux combined for 34 assists.
The 'Dogs played a pair of matches on Saturday starting with a morning tilt with Prairie View A&M. The Bulldogs made quick work of the Panthers winning 25-17, 25-6, 25-10 as they outhit A&M .365 to -.056. Coates led the team with 11 kills and Carly Scarbrough added nine. Coates added five service aces and Eppright had a team-high 13 digs.
Wrapping up the tournament facing host Incarnate Word, the Cardinals proved to be a solid test for the 'Dogs challenging them for every point. The 'Dogs came away with the sweep narrowly winning the sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-22. Coates had a season-high 18 kills, including 10 in the first set. Eppright had her second-highest number of digs this season with 18 and Halteman added 38 assists.
Taking home her second tournament MVP honors of the season, Aleisha Coates was named the UIW Cardinal Classic MVP. Maggie Eppright was also named to the All-Tournament team. Coates finished the three matches with 41 kills, six service aces, six blocks and a .393 attack percentage. Eppright added 42 digs, four service aces and a perfect 1.000 reception percentage.
Bulldogs Series History vs. Fresno Pacific
This will be the 11th all-time meeting for the Bulldogs against Fresno Pacific as Fresno State has won the last three meetings. The 'Dogs swept the Sunbirds 3-0 at the Save Mart Center and also won meetings in 2012 (3-2) and 2014 (3-0). Fresno Pacific won the first seven meetings as the teams met once every season from 2005-11.

Fresno Pacific got its season started over the weekend playing at the West Region Showdown hosted by San Francisco State. A Division II program that is a member of the PacWest Conference, the Sunbirds topped Concordia (3-1) and San Francisco State (3-0) while falling to Simon Fraser (2-3) and Cal State L.A. (3-0).
Junior outside hitter Karah Mitchell led Fresno Pacific with 41 kills (2.73k/s) while senior Chelsea Sparks has a team-high 74 digs (5.29 dig/s). Senior setter Bissie DenHartog has 150 assists and six service aces. The Sunbirds are edging their opponents in kills per set, assists per set, aces per set and digs per set.
Eppright moves into second-place on all-time digs list in Bulldog history
Midway through Friday's match against Texas Southern, Maggie Eppright moved into second place on the all-time list in digs passing Diana Nalbandian (1994-97). The San Luis Obispo native now has 135 digs through her first 10 matches of 2016 to give her 1,507 in her career and sits only 64 shy of moving into the top 10 all-time in the Mountain West in digs. Tricia Tuley (1993-96) hold the program record with 1,864.
