The Bulldogs score four goals in the second half to capture their first win of the season
HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Fresno State women's soccer team scored four goals in the second half to defeat Portland State 4-3 on a rainy Friday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium in Hillsboro, Ore. The Bulldogs remain undefeated against the Vikings in five all-time meetings.
"We came in with a game plan and were just a little bit blindsided by the weather conditions and we caught ourselves trailing again," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said.
Fresno State (1-3) came out firing in the first half, getting off nine shots compared to four by Portland State (0-3), but was unable to find the back of the net. Sophomore Viking Krystal de Ramos scored her first career goals to give Portland State a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
"With the support of a really solid bench, we got our bearings and regrouped at halftime and made sure that we played with the approach that was going to get us back in the game," Zwaschka added.
Just six minutes into the second half, Fresno State junior Peyton Cline received a series of passes from senior captain Alyssa Holsworth and junior Myra Delgadillo to score her second career goal to bring the 'Dogs within one score. The assists credited to Holsworth and Delgadillo were their firsts of the season.
"We went for the goal with more conviction because we knew we had to get back into it early enough that gave us time to catch up," Zwaschka said. "To get back in early, obviously it gave us the belief that we could get the second one. We had to control the match the way we had intended to from the start."
Thirteen minutes later, Fresno State freshman Julia Glaser scored her first career goal from inside the box to tie the game 2-2 after passes from Delgadillo and sophomore Alyssa Nishikawa placed the ball in perfect position. Delgadillo's two assists are single-game and single-season career highs, while Nishikawa's was the first in her young Bulldog career.
The Vikings took back the lead with a goal in the 78th minute, but equalized the score at 3-3 just two minutes later with an own goal by Portland State.
Over the next eight minutes, the Bulldog offense was relentless, getting off four corner kicks and three shots before Delgadillo scored her fourth-career game-winning goal with just one minute remaining.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Theroux notched her first career victory after starting her second-straight game for the Bulldogs. She now has 13 saves and a 2.87 goals-against average this season.
Fresno State's 12 points are the most in a game for the Bulldogs since joining the Mountain West in 2012 and their four assists are the most since Sept. 8, 2013, when they notched four against Eastern Washington. Nine different Bulldogs combined for a season-high 18 shots and 11 shots on goal.
Glaser continues to lead Fresno State with 12 shots this season, followed closely behind by Delgadillo's 10 shots.
The 'Dogs return to action on Sunday as they head to UC Davis for a 1 p.m. PT kickoff. The Aggies tied Sacramento State 0-0 on Friday afternoon and own a 2-2-1 record so far this season.
