Freshman Julia Glaser scored in the 89th minute for her second goal of the weekend to give the ’Dogs the victory
DAVIS, Calif. – The Fresno State women's soccer team heads home from its first weekend road trip of the season with back-to-back wins after a 1-0 shutout of UC Davis (2-3-1) on Sunday afternoon at Aggie Soccer Field in Davis, Calif., and a 4-3 victory on Friday at Portland State.
"I was really pleased with the team effort today," Fresno State head coach Brian Zwaschka said. "We had another strong performance from our bench, which helped with the overall game management, and our defensive focus was tremendous."
The Bulldogs' game-winning goal in the 89th minute marks the first time in the program's 22-year history that Fresno State has won back-to-back games with goals scored within the last two minutes of regulation. Last Friday, Fresno State took a 4-3 lead over Portland State in the 89th minute.
"It comes down to sticking to the game plan," Zwaschka added. "We're confident that if we do the right things at the right moments, we'll score, and this was a game where we managed the defensive side a lot better than we have done this season."
Bulldog freshman Julia Glaser, who leads the 'Dogs with 16 shots this year, scored her second goal of the weekend with just 1:27 left in the game after a counterattack and sequence of passes from junior Myra Delgadillo and senior Amanda Nunes. The assist by Delgadillo was her third of the season and Nunes' first.
The Aggies outshot the 'Dogs 18-9, but couldn't find the back of the net against Fresno State sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Theroux, who grabbed a career-high 11 saves in her first career shutout, giving her a total of 24 on the season and a 2.18 goals-against average.
"The overall defending was good today," Zwaschka said. "While Nicole [Theroux] faced some difficult shots, she collected a lot of saves that were made routine by the performance of the defense in front of her. I think she played a very important role, but it was definitely a shared effort."
This was Fresno State's first victory over the Aggies since 2009 and its first win over a Big West opponent since defeating UC Riverside (1-0 OT) on Sept. 13, 2013.
