Hairston, Omawahleh lead ‘Dogs on day one at Air Force Invitational

Freshman Hairston leads high jump, second in 60 hurdles prelims.
USAF ACADEMY, Colo. –Cierah Hairston opened the winter leading the high jump as she posted a mark of 5-7 (1.70m) on Friday at the Air Force Invitational. She also placed second in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles. Joining her with top finishes was senior Njeri Omawahleh who earned the top time in the prelims for both the 60 meters and 200 meters.
In the high jump, Hairston was sitting behind BYU's Chloe Hadley on misses going into her final attempt at 5-7. The freshman cleared the bar while Hadley missed to push the Bulldog ahead. Teammate Jestena Mattson is two spots behind Hairston in third with a mark of 5-3 (1.60m).
Hairston also qualified for the finals in the 60m hurdles where she ran the second-fastest time of the day at 8.90 seconds. Joining Hairston in the finals will be Tieara Norman (sixth) and Jestena Mattson (ninth).
Omawahleh paced the field in the short sprints, clocking a time of 7.53 in the 60 meters and 24.16 in the 200 meters. Teammate Nailah Harris-Murillo also advanced through the first day in each, placing 12th in the 60 meters and fifth in the 200 meters. Andira Ferguson also qualified in the 60 meters, placing 16th. In the 400 meters, Maja Pogorevc punched her ticket into the finals with a fourth-place finish after running a time of 57.43.
The Bulldog throwers claimed three of the top five spots in the weight throw, led by Tiffany Gilmore's personal-best heave of 60-3½ (18.37m) to finish in second. The throw was nearly three feet beyond her previous best which she set in 2015. Right behind her was Aisiah Tuiasosopo in third and Kayla Hopkins in fifth.
Saturday will be the final day of the Air Force Invitational.
