Offseason Football Notebook: 2017 staff in place

FRESNO, Calif. - Head football coach Jeff Tedford hosted a press conference for the first time in 2017 on Monday and the media had its initial meeting with offensive coordinator Kalen DeBoer and defensive coordinator Orlondo Steinauer. "The one thing that helped me decide on this job was not just coach Tedford, but seeing that there were three alumni coming back to this program to be a part of it and the excitement that they had. And not even knowing them, I did met coach Christian on my visit here, but not even knowing them I realized that this is a special place and coach Tedford is a special coach and their excitement to come here showed me that things were heading in the right direction." ~ Coach DeBoer

"As coach Tedford eluded to, there were some lengthy interview processes on the phone, and things like that, and as a I talked to coach longer and more extensively, what became evident to me is that he had a really clear vision. And that was refreshing to me. Things had gone really well in Canada, and things were progressing fast, and this just was something that was unplanned obviously, and it was a dot on my timeline that I thought I really needed to explore. The decision wasn't that tough once I was able to have longer conversations and once I came down and met with him in person." ~ Coach Steinauer

Prelude to Signing Day

The 2017 Signing Day is on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The day will be capped at the Falls Event Center on Fig Garden Loop by an event hosted by the Bulldog Foundation. The event, with Coach Tedford and staff, is tentatively set to start at 4 p.m. and conclude at approximately 6:30 p.m. More information will be distributed in the near future on how to purchase tickets to attend as well as plans for the morning media portion of the day.

Meet the Staff
The entire Bulldog football coaching staff is set for a halftime introduction at the men's basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 14 (vs. Boise State). Tip-off is at 4 p.m. PT. Tickets start as low as $15.

Back for 2017
Three staffers remain upstairs in the Bulldog football coaching office from a season ago: Brad Vonnahme (Offensive Analyst), Lucus Gingold (Special Teams Quality Control Analyst) and Todd Hunt (Defensive Graduate Assistant). Zach Bell (Assistant Director of Player Personnel), who was retained, is the most recent departure, having accepted a position at his alma mater, Georgia Southern.

Academic All-American
• Jacob Vazquez, the seventh Academic All-American in program history, is set to be honored once more as President Castro will acknowledge his accomplishments.
