'Dogs finish day one of ITA Regionals, look to start doubles play

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team kicked off the ITA Northwest Regionals on Thursday. The tournament started with singles play, two Bulldogs made it through the first three rounds of the tournament in Cem Erturk and Henrique Osorio.
The tournament started Oct. 19 and runs through Oct. 23. Erturk, Osorio, Bailey Gong, Mantas Bugailiskis, Patrik Pech, Jeremy Moser, Cagatay Soke, Zdenek Derkas and Youssef Hassan made the trip for the Bulldogs.Â
Round of 128 – Seven Bulldogs advanced from the round of 128. Erturk, who is a No. 17 seed in the regional, defeated Nash Vollenweider (6-4, 6-2). No. 17 Bugailiskis bested Brian Lee of Saint Mary's in straight sets 7-6(2), 6-3. No. 17 Osorio defeated Ricardo Almeida of Eastern Washington (6-3, 6-2) of in the round of 128. Pech bested Gabe Souza of Portland State 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Hassan beat Majeed Bukhari of Portland State in three sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-4). Soke defeated Everett Maltby of UC Davis in straight sets (6-3, 6-2). Moser bested Kyle Everly of Gonzaga 6-3, 6-4.
Derkas entered the regional as a No. 10, the highest seeding for Fresno State. He fell to David Goulak of UC Davis in three sets (6-3, 6-7(8) 6-1). He will continue in the consolation bracket. Gong was bested by No. 17 Mathieu Garcia of Portland (6-1, 6-3). He will continue in the consolation bracket.
Round of 64 – Two Bulldogs advanced from the round of 64. No. 17 Osorio beat Pacific's Vince Rettke (6-3, 6-1). Erturk bested Nash Vollenweirder of Saint Mary's in three sets (2-6, 6-4, 6-4).
No. 17 Bugailiskis fell to Colton Weeldreyer in the round of 64 (7-5, 6-2). Pech fell to No. 5 Jack Molloy of Cal 6-3, 6-3. Pech will continue in the consolation bracket. Hassan was bested by No. 17 Ruadhan O'Sullivan of Gonzaga. Hassan will continue in the consolation bracket. Moser was defeated by No. 17 Mert Zincirli in three sets (6-2, 5-7, 6-2). Moser will also continue in the consolation bracket. Soke fell to No. 4 Akihiro Tanaka of Oregon, he will continue in the consolation bracket.
Looking to Round of 32 – No. 17 seed Osorio will face No. 12 Paul Barretto of Cal at 2:30 p.m. PT on Friday. Erturk will face Gonzaga's Sam Feit on Friday at 1:30 p.m. PT.
Looking to the Consolation bracket – The first round of the consolation bracket will be played on Friday following doubles. Pech will face Scott Paz of Eastern Washington at 1:30 p.m. PT. Gong will play Victor Pereira of Eastern Washington at 1:00 p.m. PT. Derkas will meet Devon Kashishian of Eastern Washington at 12 p.m. PT. Moser will face Andre Gu of Santa Clara at 2:30 p.m. PT .Hassan will meet Vince Rettke of Gonzaga at 2:30 p.m. PT.
Looking to doubles – Doubles play will begin on Friday, four Fresno State duos will be competing. Hassan and Moser will face No. 9 Kumar and Sah of Stanford at 8 a.m. PT. Bugailiskis and Derkas will make their doubles debut against Khan and Seby of Santa Clara at 8 a.m. PT. Erturk and Soke will face Paz and Raveau of Eastern Washington at 8 p.m. PT. Osorio and Pech will make their doubles debut against Edwards and West of Portland State at 8:00 a.m. PT.
