Fresno State’s comeback falls short in 85-72 loss to CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Fresno State faced off against CSUN on Saturday afternoon at the Matadome in pursuit of its second straight road win and second straight victory over a Big West opponent. The Matadors led 50-27 at the half, but the Bulldogs would outscore Cal State Northridge 25-10 in the third quarter and keep it within single digits until under three minutes remaining before ultimately falling, 85-72.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Fresno State came out strong and took a 9-8 lead with 6:30 remaining in the opening quarter before CSUN's offense started clicking. By the 5:21 mark of the first period, the Matadors had taken a 14-9 lead and at the end of one, CSUN led 25-18 over the Bulldogs.
The Matadors caught fire from downtown in the second period as CSUN hit 5-of-7 from 3-point range en route to its second consecutive 25-point quarter. The 'Dogs struggled on the offensive end in the second as they only managed nine points in the frame. Cal State Northridge took a 50-27 lead into the locker room.
It was a completely different Fresno State team in the third quarter. The Bulldogs outscored CSUN 25-10 and ended the period on a 22-2 run. The 'Dogs shot 10-of-13 (76%) from the floor and held the Matadors to 4-of-12 shooting. Cal State Northridge's lead shrunk to 60-52 after three.
Fresno State was within single-digits until just under three minutes remaining, but CSUN was able to fend off the Bulldog charge and earn an 85-72 win.
