FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's lacrosse team fought back from a halftime deficit to defeat LIU Brooklyn 15-12 in Friday's home opener. The Bulldogs were led by freshman duo Marina Mayo and Tiffiny Wallace with four goals apiece.
"We've talked all preseason about fighting through adversity and the team really listened to us at halftime and came out strong in the second half," said head coach Jessica Giglio. "They made the adjustments that we as coaching staff asked and held LIU Brooklyn scoreless for a majority of the second half. We can't ask for more than that."
Fresno State (1-0) has now won four of its last five season openers, and recorded their third consecutive win in home openers.
In addition to the eight goals by Mayo and Wallace, sophomore Sarah Bloise logged three goals for the Bulldogs. Junior Nicole Ortlieb added a pair of goals. Sophomore Ryleigh Bone and Senior Kyleigh Westgarth tacked on a goal each to round out Fresno State's 15 goals on the night.
The Bulldogs put the first dent in the scoreboard in the first 40 seconds of the game when Tiffiny Wallace drove in to score her first collegiate goal.
LIU Brooklyn (0-1) quickly answered back with a goal from Kathryn Harvey.
The Blackbirds ended the first half on a 6-0 run. The Bulldogs were down 10-4 at the half before making a huge comeback in the second half.
