Junior transfer Savannah McHellon paced the ’Dogs on Saturday, going 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored
TEMPE, Ariz. – The No. 24 Bulldog softball team found its offensive spark on Saturday, collecting a combined 16 runs on 25 hits in a 4-0 victory over Purdue and a 12-6 win over San Diego at the ASU Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz.

Sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung threw her second-straight shutout against the Boilermakers, while junior transfer Savannah McHellon paced the Bulldog offense on Saturday, going 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored.

"We fought better offensively today," Fresno State head coach Linda Garza said. "I'm proud to see the newcomers add some depth and improve an already solid group. The plan each game is to learn, grow and better prepare for conference play."

In her second start of the season, Dung mirrored her numbers from Friday's game against Indiana, striking out seven batters and allowing three hits and two walks against the Boilermakers (0-4).

The 'Dogs jumped to an early lead after senior Malia Rivers led off the game with a single, stole second, and was hit home on an RBI single by sophomore Morgan Howe. Then, in the top of the second inning, McHellon singled, advanced to second after a sac bunt from freshman Schuylar Broussard, and reached home thanks to an RBI double by junior Katie Castellon.

In the fourth, sophomore Vanessa Hernandez was walked, followed by a free pass to McHellon, and was sent home on a pinch-hit single by sophomore Dominique Jackson. Finally, in the sixth inning, Hernandez would reach on a single and score when McHellon doubled to left field.

Three pitchers put in work for Purdue: starter Kaitlyn Moody (2.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R), Brooke Perry (1.1 IP, 1 R, 3 BB) and Maddie Damon (3.2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 2 K).

In the afternoon game against San Diego (0-3), McHellon would get her first win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings, striking out three and allowing two runs on six hits and a walk. She also helped her cause, batting 2-for-3, including a three-run home run.

As a team, the Bulldogs recorded 17 hits, the most in a game since April 8, 2016, against New Mexico.

The Toreros found the scoreboard in the top of the first inning, after two singles led to a run, only to be followed by McHellon's home run in the bottom of the inning.

San Diego got a run back in the second, but watched Fresno State score six unanswered runs on five RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 9-2 lead. The Toreros then rallied to score four runs in the top of the sixth off Bulldog sophomore pitcher Kira McKechnie.

Freshman Samantha Mejia came in to close the game out for the 'Dogs and gave up one hit in the final two innings.

Fresno State added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a final 12-6 lead.

Notably, Broussard notched a team-high four RBIs, while fellow freshman infielder Miranda Rohleder recorded a team-high three hits.

San Diego saw two pitchers in action: starter Megan Sabbatini (4 IP, 5 R, 9 H) and Lauren Berriatua (2 IP, 7 R, 8 H, 1 K).

What's next?
The Bulldogs (3-1) take on Stanford (4-0) at 10:45 a.m. PT on Sunday.

On Friday, the Cardinal defeated UTEP, 10-1, and Creighton, 7-2, while on Saturday they earned victories against Western Michigan, 3-2, and Purdue, 16-9.
