The women’s 2017 spring golf season tees off Feb. 27
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's golf team is not far off from getting its season back underway and the Bulldogs' sole senior on the roster, Gudrun Bjorgvinsdottir, is gearing up to lead the team down the stretch.
Â
Bjorgvinsdottir fired an under-par average in the fall, shooting a 71.88 over eight rounds. She also owns a streak of eight-straight events placing in the top 15 dating back to last season, with her best in that span a tie for second at last season's Fresno State Classic.
Â
GoBulldogs.com caught up with Bjorgvinsdottir to see what's going through her mind as she prepares for the spring season that gets started later this month as well as some fun questions regarding her Icelandic background and different courses that she has played all over the world.
Â
Q: What individual or team goal is motivating you the most as you prepare for your spring schedule that starts Feb. 27?
Â
Gudrun: I think everyone is hungry for a win this semester both individually and team wise. That's what will be motivating us to all work as hard as we can.
Â
Q: What was your favorite memory or what were you most proud of from this past fall semester?
Â
Gudrun: My favorite memory from last fall was going to Mexico and representing Iceland in the World Amateur Team Championships. But I am also proud that I kept my average score below par.
Â
Q: You've played with some talented teammates that had standout senior seasons during your career at Fresno State like Hannah Sodersten and Madchen Ly, is there anything you've learned playing with those two that you've applied as a senior this year?
Â
Gudrun: Watching both Madchen and Hannah finish their college careers with great seasons motivates me to do even better. I think the most important thing that I have learned is that you need to stay in the moment and take each day at a time.
Â
Q: You won the Mountain West individual championship as a freshman, what would it mean to you to cap your senior season with another Mountain West win?
Â
Gudrun: I couldn't imagine a better way to finish up my college career, but I am more so hoping that I'll be going out as a champion as a team with everyone this time!
Â
Q: How many hours a week would you estimate that you are practicing your game? Is there a specific part of your game you'd say you concentrate on the most?
Â
Gudrun: I practice my golf game around 25 hours per week in addition to working out and the mental game. I definitely concentrate most on my short game (chips and putts), those are the shots that count the most.
Â
Q: What is the coolest golf course you have ever played and why?
Â
Gudrun: Probably Karuizawa in Japan because it had a par 6 hole.
Â
Q: What is the hardest golf course you have ever played and why?
Â
Gudrun: Arcos Garden in Spain. I played it when I was about 14-years-old and I have this memory of it being such a hard course with a lot of elevations and being really long. Someday I will have to go there again to update my opinion.
Â
Q: Who is the funniest person on your team and why?
Â
Gudrun: Sunny [Yifei Wang], because she is funny without knowing it!
Â
Q: If you had a chance to play 18 with anybody, who would that be and why?
Â
Gudrun: It is really hard to pick out one player, but I would say Annika Sorenstam because she has been my role model since I was little and I would like to ask her a lot of questions.
Â
Q: You have a unique background having grown up in Iceland. If a friend were traveling there, where would you send them first?
Â
Gudrun: That is a very tough question. There is so much to see and do in Iceland. It really depends what you like doing. But I would definitely recommend doing as much sightseeing as you can. If this friend plays golf, bring golf clubs because we have some amazing golf courses to try.
Â
Q: How much do you enjoy playing the annual Fresno State Classic (March 13-14, 2017) and what does it mean to have the fan support?
Â
Gudrun: I really enjoy playing at home. It is a great tournament and having all the support from our people is amazing. We really appreciated all of the support and help that the fans give us.Â
