'Dogs advance to Pacific Tournament championship

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team traveled to compete in the Pacific Tournament hosted by the University of the Pacific. The Bulldogs finished the first day of competition 2-0, with wins against New Mexico and Pacific.
"Our guys showed toughness and grit today by fighting to get the win against two solid opponents," said head coach Luke Shields. "Being mentally tough is something we've been preaching since the beginning of the season and today we finally took a big step in the right direction. Our energy against Pacific was the best energy we've had all year and we will carry that momentum into the tomorrow's final."
Against the Lobos
New Mexico entered the tournament with a 6-5 record on the season and a 1-0 record against Mountain West opponents after defeating Boise State 4-0 on Jan. 21.
Fresno State defeated New Mexico 4-1 in the first round of the tournament. Â
The match started with singles.
The Bulldogs put the first dent in the scoreboard when Xander Veys defeated his opponent at the No. 1 position 6-1, 6-4.
Mantas Bugailiskis gave Fresno State a 2-0 lead after defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 6 spot.
The 'Dogs were within one of clinching the match when Euan McIntosh gave them a 3-0 lead when he bested his opponent 7-5, 6-4 at the No. 2 position.
The Lobos put their first and only point on the board in the No. 4 spot when Dominic West defeated Henrique Osorio 6-4, 6-0.
Youssef Hassan clinched the win for Fresno State in the No. 5 spot defeating his opponent 7-6(4)-6-3.
Since the Bulldogs clinched the match in singles, the doubles point was not played out.
Against the Tigers
Fresno State advanced to the semifinals against Pacific.
The Tigers came into the tournament with a 6-4 record on the season and 1-0 record against Mountain West opponents after defeating Nevada 5-2 on Feb. 12.
Fresno State defeated Pacific 4-3.
In doubles, Xander Veys and Mantas Bugailiskis defeated their opponents at the No. 2 doubles position 6-3.
Patrik Pech and Euan McIntosh clinched the doubles point for Fresno State when they defeated their opponents 7-5 at the No. 1 doubles spot, allowing the Bulldogs to take a 1-0 lead into singles.
Pacific struck first claiming a point at the No. 4 singles position, when Henrique Osorio was defeated by Pacific's Alex Giannini 6-0, 6-2.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead when Tadiwa Chinamo defeated Euan McIntosh 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 2 position.
Fresno State had its first singles win in the No. 5 spot, when Youssef Hassan defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-3, to tie the match 2-2.
Zdenek Derkas put the Bulldogs up 3-2 when he bested his opponent at the No. 3 position 6-1, 6-3.
The match was clinched at the No. 6 spot, Mantas Bugailiskis defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-2 to get the win for Fresno State.
The Tigers grabbed the last point of the match at the No. 1 position when Miguel Diaz beat Xander Veys 7-5, 6-3.
