Stloukalova named MW Freshman of the Year

Four Bulldogs garner four postseason honors.
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Mountain West announced its 2016-17 All-Conference team and individual awards for women's tennis Wednesday afternoon, as selected by the league's 11 head coaches. Three Fresno State athletes garnered four postseason honors including Katerina Stloukalova who was named MW Freshman of the Year.
Stloukalova's selection gave the Bulldogs their third Freshman of the Year award in their five seasons in the Mountain West (Rana Sherif Ahmed, 2013; Mayar Sherif Ahmed, 2015). The native of Brno, Czech Republic registered a 24-15 overall singles record on the year with a 13-8 dual record. Stloukalova played all but one dual match in the No. 1 spot for the Bulldogs after joining the team in the fall.
Against ranked opponents, the freshman notched three wins on the year with all of them coming during her final seven matches. Closing the season with a 7-1 record in her final 10 matches, Stloukalova finished the regular season with straight set wins over then-No. 41 Carol Yang, 6-3, 6-2, and then-No. 98 Claudia Herrero, 6-4, 6-4. The win on the final day of the regular season gave her the distinction of being the only player in the conference to defeat this year's MW Player of the Year and ITA Mountain Regional champion.
On the All-MW singles team were Stloukalova and sophomore Emma Wilson. Wilson, who was outside of the Bulldogs' top six last season, moved up to the No. 2 and No. 3 positions where he combined to post a 23-15 overall record and go 12-8 in duals. The sophomore opened the year with the biggest win of her career, defeating then-No. 83 Rianna Valdes of USC in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Wilson's 23 singles wins ranks second the team.
On the All-MW doubles team, Wilson and teammate Georgia Lawson earned one of the eight spots after posting a 6-4 record. The two began playing together in the No. 1 position on Feb. 25. In their only finished match of the season against a ranked opponent, the duo knocked-off then-No. 48 ranked Shweta Sangwan and Alyssa Tobita of Oregon.
