'Dogs rack up five All-Mountain West awards

BOISE, Idaho – The Mountain West announced its 2016-17 All-Conference teams and individual awards for men's tennis Thursday night. The awards are voted on by the league's eight head coaches. Four Bulldogs earned postseason accolades, including Zdenek Derkas who was named MW Freshman of the Year.
This is Fresno State's first MW Freshman of the Year award since joining the conference in 2012.
Derkas, who was a spring addition for the Bulldogs, posted a 12-6 dual record playing primarily at the No. 3 singles position. He recorded a 3-0 conference record at the No. 3 position. Derkas was ahead in three other conference matches before the matches were clinched on another court. The freshman plays at the No. 3 doubles position with Youssef Hassan. The duo posted nine wins on the season. The duo had wins over No. 40 UC Santa Barbara, Nebraska and Arizona. Â Â
This is Derkas' first career All-MW accolade.
Junior Xander Veys was named to the All-MW singles team. Veys, who transferred to Fresno State this season, posted an 18-11 record playing primarily at the No. 1 position. He finished conference with a 3-1 record at the No. 1 position. Veys had a notable win over No. 100 Corey Pang (No. 44 Cal Poly) and Enzo Sommers (No. 41 Washington). The junior was the only Bulldog to be named Mountain West Player of the Week this season.
This is Veys' first career All-MW accolade.
Senior Euan McIntosh was named to the All-MW singles team for the third consecutive year. McIntosh recorded a 20-11 dual record playing primarily at the No. 2 position. He finished conference with a 4-2 record at the No. 2 position. McIntosh had a notable win over No. 85 Ben Donovan (No. 44 Cal Poly). The team captain finished the 2016-17 regular season on a four-match winning streak. He clinched back-to-back conference wins over Boise State (4-1) and Nevada (4-1).
McIntosh was also named to the All-MW doubles team for the third consecutive year, with partner Patrik Pech. The duo primarily played at the No. 1 doubles position. They recorded an 8-7 dual record and a 2-2 conference record.
This is Pech's first career All-MW accolade.
