Sophomore Kamalani Dung allowed just two hits as the Bulldogs defeated UNLV 3-0 on Saturday afternoon
LAS VEGAS – A game filled with exciting defensive plays and lights-out pitching went the way of the Bulldogs as the Fresno State softball team shut out UNLV 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Eller Media Stadium in Las Vegas. Sophomore pitcher Kamalani Dung, starting for the second game in as many days, threw her Mountain West-best seventh shutout of the season and the 'Dogs scored all three of their runs in the top of the seventh to clinch their third MW series of the year.
Â
Each team showed a solid defensive effort until the Bulldogs put together three seventh-inning hits and took advantage of two Rebel miscues to put themselves ahead. The Bulldogs (28-20, 8-8 MW) scattered seven hits in the game, while the Rebels (23-22, 6-11 MW) didn't record their first hit until one out in the sixth.
Â
Dung allowed two hits or less in a start for the fifth time this season, needing only two strikeouts to record her 19th win and lowering her ERA to 2.22. The Rebels (23-22, 6-11 MW) saw freshman Breana Burke (3-3, 2.98 ERA) throw her first collegiate complete game on Saturday, allowing one earned run on seven hits and no walks. She also struck out two in the campaign. Â
Â
For the second game in a row, sophomore Morgan Howe recorded two hits, including her fifth double of the season, while sophomore Vanessa Hernandez accounted for Bulldogs' other extra-base hit, knocking an RBI-double. Hernandez, who leads the team with 17 extra-base hits, notched her first since getting a double at Utah State on April 7.
Â
Junior Savannah McHellon (2-for-3) got the Bulldogs' seventh-inning rally going with a single, senior Kierra Willis knocked in the go-ahead run, and sophomore Dominique Jackson's RBI was her second of the year. Freshman Haley Fuller recorded a career-high five putouts, including three athletic plays in foul territory, and freshman second baseman Miranda Rohleder notched four assists for the third time this season.
Â
How it happened
Howe attempted to get things going for the Bulldogs in the top of the first with a two-out single to right, but senior Lindsey Willmon popped out to second to leave her stranded. Dung, starting her second straight game, gave up a walk in the bottom half, but rung up a batter and kept the game scoreless. McHellon then began the second with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a fly ball to right, but the Bulldogs couldn't bring her home. Dung followed up by retiring the Rebel side in order and neither team was able to get a runner on base in the third.
Â
Howe then led off the fourth with a double, but the Bulldogs left a runner stranded on second base for the second time in the game. UNLV was unable to get a base runner on in the bottom of the fourth, and Hernandez led off the fifth with a single, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. The Rebels placed their first runner in scoring position when Howe dropped a routine fly ball to right, but the 'Dogs escaped unharmed thanks to a couple of acrobatic defensive plays.
Â
In the top of the sixth, with one out, Rohleder reached on a fielding error by the first baseman and Howe made it to first on a fielder's choice, but the Bulldogs stranded their third and fourth runners of the game to keep the game at no score. The Rebels finally got their first hit of the game in the bottom of the sixth with one out when junior Janine Petmecky doubled to left center, but UNLV was unable to capitalize.
Â
The Bulldogs were the first to strike when McHellon led things off in the seventh with a single up the middle and was pinch run for by freshman Kindra Hackbarth, who scored on a throwing error when Willis bunted to first. Willis then scored on a double by Hernandez, who advanced to third when Fuller reached base on an error. Hernandez scored the third run for the Bulldogs when Jackson singled to right center and the game went into the bottom of the frame, Fresno State holding a 3-0 lead.
