GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Fresno State baseball team dropped its series finale at Michigan State 8-2 on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Fresno State (16-15) collected eight hits in the contest with three 'Dogs notching multi-hit games. Senior outfielder Jake Stone had a pair of singles and scored a run along with senior third baseman Jesse Medrano smacking his third career home run in the second inning. Seniors Austin Guibor and Joe Prior each came into the game as pinch-hitters and each collected a pair of hits.
Michigan State (18-10), who entered the weekend on a five-game losing skid, continued its strong weekend from the plate totaling eight timely hits to score eight runs and finished with 27 runs scored in the series. Designated hitter Alex Troop had a triple and home run along with scoring two runs and added three RBIs, while center fielder Brandon Hughes had a pair of singles and scored three runs.
MSU got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with three runs off Bulldog starting pitcher Dominic Topoozian as a leadoff single by left fielder Bryce Kelley was followed by a walk to third baseman Marty Bechina. After second baseman Dan Durkin reached on a fielder's choice to load bases, a walk to Troop brought home the game's first run which was followed by a single up the middle by Hughes that drove in Bechina and Durkin. With no outs and runners on the corners, the 'Dogs were able to escape the inning with no more damage as Medrano threw out Troop at the plate on a fielder's choice and got shortstop Royce Ando to bounce into a 5-4-3 double play.
The 'Dogs responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second as Stone got the Bulldogs' first hit of the game with a single to third base which was followed by home run to left field by Medrano to bring the 'Dogs within a run at 3-2.
THe Spartans added two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 7-2 lead and added a solo home run to right field by Troop in the eighth.
Topoozian suffered his first loss of the season tossing four innings allowing four hits, five earned runs and struck out two. He gave way to Fred Schlichtholz who allowed two runs in the fifth and struck out one before sophomore Edgar Gonzalez tossed the final three innings to finish the game for his third-longest outing of the season. Andrew Gonzalez picked up his third win of the season for MSU as the right-hander went six innings allowing only four hits and two runs.
