The Fresno State baseball team fell 7-6 to San Francisco at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium on Tuesday evening. The 'Dogs are back in action on Thursday hosting Air Force at 6:05 p.m.
Fresno State (16-16) finished with 10 hits on the evening as junior shortstop Korby Batesole had three hits, including his second double of the season, and scored a run. Junior first baseman Aaron Arruda had his team-leading 17th multi-hit game with a pair of hits, including his sixth home run of the season and matched his career-high with four RBIs.
San Francisco (16-17) added 12 hits with four players with multi-hit games as junior second baseman Michael Perri went 3-for-5 with a double, scored a run and had an RBI. Junior first baseman Ross Puskarich had a single and double and drove in four RBIs while scoring a run.
The Dons got the scoring started with a quick run in the top of the first as a two-out walk to third baseman Allen Smoot, who moved up to second on a wild pitch, was followed by an RBI double to left field by Perri. A two-run RBI double to center field by Puskarich in the third inning landed just in front of Bulldog center fielder Austin Guibor allowing a pair of Dons to score and put the visitors out in front 3-0.
The Bulldogs equaled the Dons with three runs in the bottom of the fourth as senior third baseman Jesse Medrano led off with a single to center field and senior second baseman Scott Silva beat out a throw for an infield hit to put a pair on base for Arruda. The junior first baseman smacked a 0-1 pitch to left field for a three-run shot to knot the game at 3-3.
After the 'Dogs stranded the bases loaded in the sixth, the Dons made the Bulldogs pay with a four-run frame in the top of the seventh. USF added their first run on an RBI single to third base by catcher Dominic Miroglio and added two more runs on an RBI double to right center by Puskarich off Bulldog reliever Fred Schlichtholz. The 'Dons rounded out the scoring with a double down the right field line off Davis Moore to score Puskarich for the eventual game-winning run from third to take a 7-3 lead.
Fresno State cut the deficit in half with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame as Silva scored from first on an RBI single by Jake Stone who moved to second on the play. Freshman catcher Carter Bins ripped a 0-2 single back up the middle for an RBI hit to score Stone cutting the USF lead to 7-5.
A leadoff double by Batesole in the eighth came around to score on an RBI single back up the middle by Arruda, but the 'Dogs stranded a pair of runners on base as Stone flied out to second base. A two-out walk to Zach Ashford in the ninth brought the game-winning run to the plate, but Batesole went down on strikes to end the contest.
Seven different pitchers threw for the 'Dogs as freshman Ryan Jensen made his starting debut tossing three innings allowing six hits and three runs. JJ Santa Cruz and Dominic Topoozian each tossed an inning before giving way to Schlichtholz, who suffered the loss allowing four runs. Moore, Ricky Tyler Thomas and Rickey Ramirez finished out the Bulldog hurlers.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday hosting Air Force (14-17, 4-11 MW) at 6:05 p.m. for Salute to Services Weekend as all military and veterans get into all the weekend games for free.
Quotable
Head coach Mike Batesole
On tonight's game against San Francisco....
"There was a lot of good stuff tonight. It's a glass half full thing. If you get six runs, you should win a Division I game. Opponents should not be able to score seven runs on you, and when they do it's hard to win. It was too easy for them offensively. We have to over come that, we have to get ahead on the count."
Batesole on this weekend's series against Air Force....
"Nobody likes being .500, that's not the goal. We have to clean it up. I'm getting tired of saying that. You fix it or you don't win and that's all there is to it. Winning on Thursday is just as important as winning the championship game. We can get enough hits and enough runs to win a game, we just have to work on our throwing. Somebody has to throw strikes. It's the same answer every time, just put it on repeat. It's not a good atmosphere to be apart of."
Batesole on the rotation for the Air Force series....
"We will have to discuss that tonight. We used Rickey Ramirez and Ricky Tyler Thomas in a midweek game again. We are looking for somebody just to throw strikes. We used our weekend starters in a mid-week game and that's going to hurt us. You might even see Gonzalez starting soon because we have already gone through everybody. Somebody is going to have to pick up the slack this weekend. We just have to figure it out. We have some work to do and if we fix it, we will be amazing, but somebody has got to throw strikes, that's it."
