Men's Tennis announces 2016-17 team awards

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State men's tennis team celebrated its end of the year banquet Thursday night. The team handed out four team awards and celebrated the accomplishments of the 2016-17 season.
Sophomore Mantas Bugailiskis was named the Most Valuable Player for the 2016-17 season. Bugailiskis finished the season with a team-best 24-8 overall record. Bugailiskis had winning-streaks as long as six consecutive matches during the season. He logged a 21-6 dual record and a 6-1 Mountain West conference record, playing at the No. 4-6 singles positions. Bugailiskis played primarily at No. 2 doubles with Xander Veys. The duo posted a 13-8 overall record.
Senior captain Euan McIntosh was honored with the Mr. Bulldog Award. This award is given to a student-athlete who is a leader on and off the court. As the team's only senior, McIntosh finished the season with a 21-12 overall singles record. McInotsh posted a 15-10 dual record and 4-2 conference record. McIntosh defeated one ranked opponent this season in No. 85 Ben Donovan (Cal Poly). McInotsh finished the regular season on a four-match winning streak. The senior clinched the wins in Fresno State's last two regular season conference matches against Boise State and Nevada, respectively. McIntosh was paired with Patrik Pech at the No. 1 doubles position to record a 9-8 dual record. He has recorded 60 wins during his three seasons at Fresno State. He was named to the All-MW Singles and All-MW Doubles team in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Â
Junior Xander Veys took home the Most Improved Player award. The transfer started the season playing at the No. 3 singles position before making the jump to the No. 1 position for the majority of the season. Veys recorded a 20-11 overall singles record, 16-9 dual record and a 3-1 conference record. He recorded win over a ranked opponent in No. 100 Corey Pang (Cal Poly). Veys went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles during the MW Championship. He defeated Mountain West Player of the Year Jakob Amilon (UNLV) in straight sets during the semifinal match, to put Fresno State up 3-0. Veys earned All-MW Singles Team honors this season.
Freshman Bailey Gong was the recipient of the Duane Ballard Community Service/ Academic Excellence Award. Gong is a 4.0 student and a member of the prestigious Smittcamp Family Honors College at Fresno State. He is a recipient of the President's Honors Scholarship. Gong logged approximately 14 hours of community service this year.
The Bulldogs second place MW finish marked Fresno State's highest MW finish in program history. Fresno State took home five All-MW awards at the 2017 Mountain West Championship Banquet, as well as MW Coach of the Year. Â
