Six Bulldogs set sights on reaching NCAA's

Declaration lists were announced on Thursday for the East and West NCAA Preliminary Round.
FRESNO, Calif. – Six individuals will represent the Fresno State track and field team at this year's 2017 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Region Preliminary Championship, May 25-27, in Austin, Texas. The championships will be hosted by the University of Texas at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Annemarie Schwanz is scheduled to compete in the 1500 meters, an event which she claimed All-America honors in at the 2016 NCAA championships. The senior became a two-time gold medalist in the event in the Mountain West after successfully defending her 2016 title last weekend. She enters the 1500 meters with the eighth-best time of the west region qualifiers. She will be making her third-consecutive postseason appearance in the race.
The Bulldogs' other qualifier on the track is Maja Pogorevc in the 400 meters. The sophomore earned bronze last weekend at the Mountain West Championships after breaking the 54 seconds for the first time in her career. She will be making her first postseason appearance.
Fresno State's other four competitors are all in the throws, led by Kayla Hopkins who will compete in both the discus and the shot put. The junior defended her gold medal in the discus last weekend at the Mountain West Championships while also finishing fourth in the shot put. She enters the competition with the 11th-best mark in discus in the region and No. 43 in the shot put.
Vanja Spaic will also move on to the postseason in the javelin where she recently won gold at the conference championships. The sophomore enters her second postseason meet with the 14th-ranked mark in the competition.
Yazmin Torres will also compete in the discus alongside Hopkins as she enters with the No. 43 mark. Junior Aisiah Tuiasosopo earned a spot in the hammer throw with the No. 39 mark in the field.
The group will look to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships on June 7-10 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Ore.
