COLORADO SPRING, Colo. - Fresno State junior left-handed pitcher Ricky Tyler Thomas was named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season on Monday afternoon, as announced by the conference office.
It is Thomas' fifth career Mountain West Pitcher of the Week honor after the San Diego native picked up three weekly honors as a sophomore in 2016 on his way to earning First-Team All-Mountain West accolades.
The southpaw returned to his hometown last week at San Diego State tossing 6.2 innings in the 'Dogs 4-0 shutout win over the Aztecs on Thursday as he limited SDSU to three hits, all singles, no runs and struck out seven. Combining with fellow San Diego native, junior left-hander Fred Schlichtholz, the duo held a potent San Diego State lineup in check as no baserunner advanced past second base in the game.
It was Thomas' eighth career game pitching at least six innings without allowing an earned run and second time this season as he also did it at home against UC Riverside (Feb. 24) where he tossed seven innings, allowed one hit and struck out a career-best 15. .
Heading into the Mountain West Tournament hosted by New Mexico this week, Thomas leads the MW in ERA (3.70), is tied with UNM's Tyler Stevens for the strikeout lead (94), ranks second in opposing batting average (.229), wins (7), earned runs allowed (34) and is fourth in innings pitched (82.2).
