Kayla Hopkins earned her first trip to the NCAA Championships with four-meter personal record in the discus on Friday at the west regional.
AUSTIN, Texas – It took Kayla Hopkins just one attempt in the discus on Friday morning to earn her ticket to the NCAA Championships. The junior landed a four-meter personal record, hitting a mark of 194'-10" (59.38m) on her opening throw of the competition at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Hopkins' trip to the championships marks the program's first discus thrower to reach the national meet since Becky Elwood in 1997.
The Bulldogs' only event at the NCAA West Preliminary Round to feature two athletes, Yazmin Torres was the other to compete in the discus. The junior placed 35th overall with her best throw coming in at 162'-0" (49.39m) on her second attempt.
Tomorrow will mark the end of the preliminary round. Annemarie Schwanz will seek her second-straight berth to the championships in the 1,500 meters when she competes in the quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m. PT. Hopkins will also make her second appearance of the week, this time in the shot put at 4 p.m.
