Despite being only six outs away from capturing its first Mountain West Tournament title in its five years in the conference, the Fresno State baseball team suffered a heartbreaking 5-3 defeat to San Diego State in the tournament title game at Santa Star Field on Sunday afternoon.
Holding a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the eighth inning, three late runs by San Diego State proved to be too much to overcome for the Bulldogs.
After combining for 48 runs and 67 hits in its first four tournament games, Fresno State (35-25) was held to three runs and seven hits on Sunday as junior first baseman Aaron Arruda led the team with a pair of doubles as he finished the season with 17.Â
Seniors Austin Guibor, Jesse Medrano and Scott Silva each added singles as sophomore designated hitter Zach Ashford smacked his second triple of the season and freshman catcher Carter Bins added his ninth double of the season.
San Diego State (41-19) was held to eight hits by a trio of Bulldog pitchers as seven different Aztecs had a hit.
For the first time in the the tournament the 'Dogs did not score first as SDSUÂ got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with a single to left field by shortstop Danny Sheehan and the Aztecs made it 2-0 in the second inning on a solo home run to left field by catcher Dean Nevarez.
After being held to one hit in the first three innings, the Bulldogs broke through in the top of the fourth with three runs as Ashford drove home Silva from third base with  his first sacrifice fly of the season. Benefiting from SDSU right fielder David Hensley dropping the potential third out to end the frame, Bins made the Aztecs pay for their costly mistake with a two-run double to left field to give the 'Dogs a 3-2 lead.
With Bulldog starter Dominic Topoozian working the first 5.2 innings only allowing four hits and a pair of runs, freshman right-handed pitcher Ryan Jensen came on to strand runners at first and second with a groundout to second.Â
After junior southpaw Fred Schlichtholz worked a scoreless seventh, the Aztecs delivered in the eighth with three runs to take a 5-3 lead tying the game on a single to right field by left fielder Tyler Adkison before senior designated hitter Andrew Martinez singled home the game-winning runs through the left side to score Adkison and center fielder Chase Calabuig.
A two-out single by Guibor in the top of the ninth brought up the potential tying-run in senior Jake Stone, but the second-team All-MW outfielder bounced out to second to end the game.
The Bulldogs end the season winning 10 of its last 13 games,15 of its last 19 and 17 of its final 22 as the 'Dogs finished 35-25 and runners-up at the Mountain West Tournament.
Fresno State finishes the season hitting .317 from the plate as a team with staggering numbers offensively combining for 700 hits, 136 doubles, 23 triples, 76 home runs and 455 runs scored.
